PLASMOPROTECTOR
In the sun-dappled farmland, tomatoes thrive as vibrant gems of the soil. From tiny seedlings pushing through the earth to sprawling vines with fruit.
In the farmland ecosystem, tomatoes play a role beyond mere cultivation.
RALSTONIA
SOLANACEARUM
a soil-borne bacterium that causes bacterial wilt in various crops, leading to wilting and eventual death of the plants by blocking their vascular systems.
EXPERIMENT
STEP 4: CHECK IF IT WORKS
Watch both groups over time. See if the test group gets fewer virus symptoms than the control group.
STEP 1: MODIFY CELLS TO MAKE VIRUS-FIGHTING SUBSTANCES
Pick cells and alter their genes so they produce special chemicals that can kill plant viruses.
STEP 3: TEST ON TOMATO PLANTS
Grow tomato plants in a greenhouse, spray or apply the prepared chemicals to some plants.
STEP 2: COLLECT AND PREPARE THE SUBSTANCES
Grow the modified cells in a controlled environment, then get the virus-fighting chemicals from them.
SUBSTANCE USED
ESCHERICHIA COLI
a common bacteria, acts as tiny factories. We modify its genes to make erucamide, using glucose as food to fuel this process.
ERUCAMIDE
A metabolic product made by modified E. coli, which feed on glucose. This substance helps protect tomato plants by fighting off the harmful bacterium
GLUCOSE
serves as “food” for modified E. coli, giving them energy to grow and continuously produce erucamide for tomato protection.
DATA
Between 1992 and 2021, disasters caused a cumulative global loss of 3.8 trillion US dollars to agricultural production, with an average annual loss of about 123 billion US dollars. Among this, the average annual loss of grains reached as high as 69 million tons.
The global biopesticide market scale continues to expand, and it is expected to grow from $9.5 billion in 2022 to $16.75 billion in 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of 12.0%. In China, the market scale of biopesticides accounts for more than 10% of the total pesticide market scale. In 2022, the market scale reached 15.03 billion yuan, and it is expected to grow to 33.09 billion yuan by 2027, with a compound annual growth rate of 17.1%.
