APHiGO

A Next-Generation RNA Pesticide Platform for Citrus Aphid Control

In China, citrus is far more than just a fruit on the table. It is a vital pillar of agriculture,

yielding
10,000 tons
each year.

accounting for
over 1%
of global production.

More than 38% of this yield comes from Guangdong and Guangxi, regions nourished by abundant sunshine and rainfall in South China.

Direct Feeding
Aphids suck sap from young shoots, weakening growth and reducing tree vigor.
Sooty Mold
Honeydew encourages black mold growth on fruit, reducing photosynthesis and commercial value.
Virus Transmission
Aphids act as the primary vector for Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV), causing devastating viral disease outbreaks.

Economic impact is huge

What if we do nothing?
Chemical control is losing effectiveness: pests are becoming resistant, and higher pesticide use doesn't improve results.
Traditional insecticides also harm the environment, reduce beneficial insects, and pollute soil and water.
We don't need more pesticides—
we need smarter solutions.

Module 1:
Detection System

Considering aphids often hide beneath leaves, making early detection difficult, we engineered Bacillus subtilis to specifically recognize sucrose signals in aphid honeydew. Upon detecting honeydew presence, it immediately generates a remotely monitorable gas alert, enabling farmers to take action during the initial stages of aphid population development.

Module 2:
Trunk-Injected RNAi System

Through trunk injection, we deliver dsRNA encapsulated in MS2 virus-like particles (VLPs) directly into the citrus vascular system. This specifically silences key aphid genes, achieving targeted control.

The trunk injection method ensures direct delivery to the target site, minimizing environmental contamination and enhancing utilization efficiency.

Module 3:
Engineered Fungal Control System

While preserving the natural pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana, we have endowed it with new capabilities: expressing RNAi molecules targeted at aphids. This transforms each engineered fungus into a miniature RNA factory, simultaneously infecting aphids and executing genetic silencing attacks from within.

APHiGO not only solves aphid problems but is committed to building a sustainable future:

  • Significantly reducing chemical pesticide usage
  • Lowering agricultural production costs
  • Protecting biodiversity and restoring ecological balance
  • Ensuring food safety and meeting green food standards
