tons of plastic are produced annually, and
of that ends up in landfills, oceans, and ecosystems
releasing harmful byproducts, carbon emissions, and toxic chemicals.
Our project uses synthetic biology to turn plastic waste (PET) into high-value products.
Through five engineered biological pathways in E.coli and Pseudomonas cells, PET is converted into polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and Protocatechuic acid (PCA).
Our work advances Plastic Upcycling to Reduce Pollution and Loop the Economy, and thus we are PURPLE.
