“Growing up my mom carefully curated my healthy interest in nature with her love for everything that grows and breathes. The resulting scientific curiosity never left and I stayed on that life-sciency path until now.”
Why did you choose iGEM?
"I really enjoy volunteering in science communication, and with more free time in the final semesters of my bachelor's program, iGEM felt like the perfect opportunity to get involved. Bonus points because it combines science-centred organisation and communication with hands-on lab work."

Why did you choose iGEM?
"Actually, I dont really know. I have heard about it before, but wasnt really interested, but when i was asked to participate by a friend I did a bit more research on it and really liked the idea of independently desighning a experiment."

Li Jing
he/him Physics of Life MSc. Research LabWhat got you into science?
“In secondary school, I participated in a short university program about microstructures and the first lecture was all about cheese and swords! How the properties we feel and see stem from their structure at a scale we cannot see with the naked eye. I found it very interesting that we could investigate and logically explain how it works. Of course, we are much more complex than cheese, so the road to understanding biology is much more difficult and exciting :)”
Why did you choose iGEM?
"I had known about iGEM and have been wanting to participate for years but timing never quite aligned. iGEM is such an unique and special opportunity to participate in due to the anatomy us group of students have in deciding and taking care of everything in a project. Especially the non-research related facets of iGEM and trying to bridge the gap between the research and an useful application outside of just science was very appealing to me."

Get to know Dresden
The Technical University of Dresden (TU Dresden) is one of Germany’s largest and most research-intensive universities. As a member of the German Excellence Initiative, it offers a wide range of degree programmes across natural sciences, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. Interdisciplinary research is a key focus, often in collaboration with external research institutions. A standout example is the BIOTEC (Biotechnology Center), founded in 2000. BIOTEC is an interdisciplinary research centre specialising in molecular cell and developmental biology. Scientists from biology, physics, computer science, and medicine work together on fundamental questions such as gene regulation, cell division, and tissue formation. The centre is internationally oriented, with English as its working language, and it bridges basic research with applications in biotechnology. BIOTEC is part of the Dresden-concept alliance, closely linked with institutes like the Max Planck Society and the Helmholtz Association. It offers an excellent environment for students and early-career researchers, with state-of-the-art labs and cutting-edge projects.
