Eranova Bioplastics
The French blue biotech company ERANOVA, funded in 2016, has developed an innovative technology to convert seaweed into bioplastics. The company vows to solve the issue of green tides - seaweed surges causing health issues, tourism disruption and ecosystem collapses - by turning the threat into a resource. Once harvested, the seaweeds are cleaned, cultivated in raceway ponds, and their starch content is biologically enhanced. Thanks to a patented process, this biomass is turned into a starch-rich, colourless, odorless powder that is finally compounded to produce bioplastic resins.
The packaging and other bioplastic products made from ERANOVA's resins are direct substitutes to petrol-based plastics, cutting CO2 emissions in half. ERANOVA has a 1.3 ha demo site running in southern France, and will start in 2027 the construction of a production site with 80 ha of ponds, close to the existing site.
ERANOVA is proud to contribute to the iGEM competition and Grand Jamboree, we believe that iGEM is a project with potential, promoting innovative biotechnologies in Europe, and revealing talents that will shape the future of the algal sector. Algae are the most recently studied photosynthetic organisms on Earth, with less than 1% of the known species already studied. At ERANOVA we believe that unveiling the secrets of their genetics is one of the keys to unlock their potential, and that iGEM could contribute to this common effort.
