SAFETY & SECURITY

To conduct responsible research under iGEM's requirements and ensure the health of our own selves, we take safety as one of the core elements of our project. Safety measures are considered and carried out throughout our experiment procedure to avoid any unnecessary harm on our team members, the laboratory equipments we work with, and the environment.

All experimental works of this project is conducted in the laboratory of School of Future Technology, Shanghai University under the supervision of experienced adults in the laboratory. We never enter section of the laboratory that we do not have sufficient knowledge and experience to ensure our own and the lab's safety in.

Before entering the lab, all members of our team had received training in virtual laboratory online and been given talks about lab safety by adults who work in the lab so that we are aware of the experiment's procedure an safety precautions.

When we are in the laboratory, we always have lab coats and gloves on. These protection clothing are taken off immediately when we exit the lab to prevent any leakage of biological or chemical materials that could pollute the environment. We also always wear long pants and closed-toe shoes during the experiments to avoid direct contect of our skin with biological and chemical materials.

Our team members had been informed about the safety precautions of any lab instrument before using it. There is always a supervisor present when using lab instruments that are delicate or could cause harm to people around if they are operated improperly, such as the centrifuge machine and the electropherisis equipment.

Protective clothings such as lab coats and gloves are taken off immediately when we exit the lab to prevent any leakage of biological or chemical materials that could pollute the environment. We always ensure that the gloves are not in contact with our skin, personal belongings, or public areas.

All waste biological and chemical materials are disposed properly following the rules of the laboratory. Waste products that contain e-coli or other components that are harmful to the environment are collected seperately and treated under high pressure and temperature before disposure to avoid pollution to the outside environment.
