My name is Matthew Qiu. I am currently a freshman from Shanghai SMIC Private School and I’m excited to share a bit of myself with you. I would like to talk about my personalities first. I’m always calm and relaxed. So, if there’s a problem, you can always come talk to me. I’m also very confident, I believe that everything will work out for me. One of my hobbies is basketball. I love leading and working with a team. Basketball is what helps me make friends and socialize in all types of environments. Photography is another big passion of mine. Capturing moments in my life, whether it’s a sunset or a picture of my friends, helps me see the world differently. My passion for biology started when I was young. I was fascinated by how life works at different levels. I dream of contributing to the society using my biology skills someday, and that is why I joined this competition. I am looking forward to connecting and learning with you all.
Hi, I’m Zixuan Qu (Oscar), and I’m 15 years old. I actively pursue my passion for biology through academic competitions like the BBO and USABO (where I got a Gold and Silver Award, respectively), as well as in the classroom, where I’ve completed the AP Biology course. In my free time, I dive into exploring books like Campbell Biology, Sapiens, etc. I started my iGEM journey in 2024, achieving a gold medal. As the team leader of Shanghai-SDG, we aim to use spent coffee grounds to create ecofriendly biofertilizers, while also exploring and learning from the world of synthetic biology through this process. I am extremely excited to be part of this year’s iGEM competition.

Hello, I am Tammy Huang, currently a ninth grader in Shanghai American School. I am currently engaged in a cancer organization, where we utilize human body studies and biochemistry knowledge to analyze the causes of cancer and the most effective ways to reduce the likelihood of people being diagnosed with cancer. Additionally, as the founder and CEO of the sustainable biodegradable oil paint product Sustainapant, I aim to apply environmental science ethics and biochemistry methodologies to create products that are not only safe for human health but also reduce the environmental impact of traditional paints. By leveraging biochemical methodologies, we aim to develop eco-friendly, non-toxic formulations that can break down naturally over time, preventing harmful chemicals from leaching into ecosystems. Furthermore, I have experience working in a laboratory for a week, analyzing and comparing the results from DNA gel electrophoresis to determine PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) products, confirm successful amplification, check for the presence of specific DNA sequences, and detect mutations.
