Laboratory Safety

Our team strictly obey the safety protocols stipulated by China agricultural University and the national biosecurity standard. All experiments are performed in the Beijing China agricultural University, BSL-1 certified and documentation of certification available upon request.

Lab Safety rules
  1. All members have been trained to obey 100% to the safety protocols of CAU.
  2. All members have been told how to handle emergency and unexpected situations.
  3. The laboratory is kept neat, clean and free of materials that not pertinent to work.
  4. Eating, drinking, smoking, applying cosmetics and handling contact lenses is prohibited in the laboratory working areas.
  5. No food is stored or hidden in the laboratory.
  6. All lab coats must be kept in the lab after work time.
  7. No open toe shoes are worn,
  8. Each individual should be familiar with the location of fire-extinguisher, the emergency passageway and first-aid-kit.
  9. It is not allowed to throw away the experimental wastes optionally.
  10. Pipetting by mouth must be strictly forbidden; Materials must not be placed in the mouth.
  11. All individuals are required to follow the operation manuals. Safety coat, safety goggle, gloves should be used for protection.
  12. Try to avoid to heat with fire. It is not allowed for the operator to leave when using fire for heating purpose.
  13. Access to exit, emergency equipment, and utility controls shall never be blocked or obstructed. Organic solvents are not allowed to be placed around the passageway(Figure 1).

  1. Operation standards.

Before any experiments are operated a detailed Standard operation procedure (SOP) governs daily operations, what to do, how to do. And all risk points will be listed out and a teacher will be near to supervise.

Project safety design

Our project is using glycerol and glucose as double substrates to produce cheaper and more efficient erythritol. In the process all plasmids and biologic substrates are all listed in the safety substrate list.
Also in our designing, we need to use Escherichia coli DH5α and BL21(DE3) the carrier of our plasmids. It contains a risk of leakage and pollution to the environment. So we added a temperature mechanism which will release toxic substance that would only kill the coli bacteria in room temperature. Normally we keep the bacteria in 37 degrees environment. If it is exposed to room temperature for too long the bacteria will be killed to prevent pollution( cite the team:https://2023.igem.wiki/shsid-china/ ).

In society we provided a more efficient and more environmental protective way to produce erythritol. More people may be accessible to low fat sugar and decrease the price and cost to produce and buy them.

Our project embodies responsibility to biology and all documents, experiment records will be uploaded on our wiki site for transparently.
