Heureka

Heureka Science Centre

Heureka is a non-profit Finnish Science Centre, which opened its doors in 1989 after many years of collaborated planning. Inspired by other Science Centres over the world, University of Helsinki, Helsinki University of Technology (later Aalto University), Federation of Finnish Learned Societies and Union of Industries (later Confederation of Finnish Industries) joined forces to create one in Finland as well. Heureka shares the Joy of Discovery with an average of 300 000 visitors annually and is one of Finland’s most popular recreation centres, offering a huge variety of different interactive exhibitions, science programmes and events throughout the year.

Kipinä

Kipinä

Kipinä is a non-profit competition aimed to support 14–20-year-old young people in exploring their curiosity and developing their skills in science and technology. Participants enter the competition with a study, a project, or an invention, either individually or in a group. The competition is organised by TEK, the Finnish Association of Academic Engineers and Architects.

The participant's work is evaluated by a jury consisting of a wide range of specialists and aspiring ones. Each participant receives constructive feedback, with the purpose of telling what was done well and what can be improved in the future. The assessment considers the age and grade level of the author.

Our long-standing collaboration with iGEM ABOA continued this year through multiple joint efforts, reinforcing a shared commitment to education, outreach, and scientific exchange. Together, we co-organized the hands-on workshop at Heureka Science Centre on Children’s Medicine Day, giving young audiences an engaging introduction to viruses and vaccines. We also held a practice presentation meet-up in Turku, where our teams exchanged project updates, received feedback from a public speaking expert, and reflected on the iGEM experience. Additionally, our teams connected via the ABOA Archives podcast, discussing our projects, experiences, and future goals. This partnership strengthens both teams’ impact in STEM education and outreach while fostering a collaborative Finnish iGEM community.
