SANDURE — Kuwait’s Desert Biotech

E. coli-powered ideas for arid soils • water • plants

Education

Collaboration with BBS Elementary

Partnered with Ms. Sagal, Vice-Principal of the Elementary School at BBS. Our aim was to introduce synthetic biology concepts to younger students in fun, age-appropriate ways.

  • Organized short classroom sessions and interactive activities
  • Made concepts like microbes, water, and the environment easy to understand
  • Used simple visuals and hands-on examples to connect biology with everyday life
Student Interaction in Middle School
  • Encouraged questions from students and listened to their ideas
  • Observed how younger audiences think creatively about scientific problems
  • Learned to simplify complex topics without losing meaning
Guidance from Dr. Thunyan Al Onaizi

Researcher at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR). Holds a PhD, Master’s, and Bachelor’s in microbiology and ecology. He supported our team by:

  • Teaching lab safety and microbiology basics
  • Supervising experiments and helping us understand synthetic biology in practice
Broader Impact across the School
  • Teachers began adding more biology examples in lessons
  • Parents reported children discussing microbes and water conservation at home
  • Team members improved at explaining complex science in simple, relatable ways
Reflection

Education worked in two directions:

  • We inspired curiosity in younger students
  • We deepened our own understanding through Dr. Thunyan’s mentorship

This dual approach strengthened our project and built a culture of science communication at BBS.
