SANDURE — Kuwait’s Desert Biotech

E. coli-powered ideas for arid soils • water • plants

Safety Overview

Safety was one of the most important parts of our project. We made sure that everything we did in the lab was safe for both us and the environment. Our team worked only with non-pathogenic laboratory strains of E. coli, which are completely harmless and commonly used in research.

Lab Setting & Supervision

All of our lab work took place at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) with the help of Dr. Thnayan Al Onaizi, where we had access to professional lab equipment and proper supervision. We always wore lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles, and we worked in a fire-protected and sterile area to make sure our experiments stayed safe and controlled.

Sterility & Contamination Control

We disinfected all surfaces before and after use, and used flame sterilization to prevent contamination when handling samples. We also made sure to label everything clearly and keep materials separated to avoid any cross-contamination.

Waste Handling & Compliance

All biological waste was autoclaved and disposed of properly following KISR’s safety procedures. We followed our school’s safety rules at Al-Bayan Bilingual School (BBS) too, and made sure every experiment was done carefully, responsibly, and under supervision. Safety was always our top priority at every step.
