This activity was carried out in collaboration with Stefano Bertacchi, a synthetic biotechnologist, science communicator, and author passionate about making biotechnology accessible to everyone. His expertise and creativity were essential to ensuring that complex scientific topics were not only accurate but also engaging and fun for the audience.

Science can often feel intimidating, especially when it deals with highly technical fields such as synthetic biology and bioinformatics. Our goal was to break down these barriers and make cutting-edge research more relatable and entertaining. By collaborating with Stefano, we were able to combine rigorous science communication with a playful twist—using humor, memes, and jokes to capture attention and spark curiosity among a broader audience.

We produced a series of three Instagram posts that tackled topics like:

The basics and applications of synthetic biology
The role of bioinformatics in analyzing biological data
The case of Rhodococcus opacus, a bacterium with biotechnological potential

Each post blended scientific explanations with lighthearted humor and memes to make the content digestible, appealing, and shareable. The mix of rigor and playfulness allowed us to reach not only science enthusiasts but also people with little prior knowledge who were simply curious.

Design: Bold visuals, meme templates, and humorous captions combined with simple graphics and clear text to maintain a balance between fun and scientific accuracy
Structure: Each post introduced the concept, explained its significance, and included a humorous take or meme to anchor the idea in a memorable way
Interactivity:Followers were encouraged to react, comment with their own jokes or questions, and share the posts with friends, boosting engagement and community building

This activity was done in collaboration with Marco Giallino, a content creator and science communicator known for his ability to engage broad audiences with clear and relatable storytelling. His platform and communication style helped us amplify our message and reach people beyond our immediate community.

When forming a new iGEM team in Bologna, we wanted to raise awareness about the competition itself—what it is, why it matters, and how our team is working to contribute to synthetic biology innovation. By collaborating with Marco, we aimed to present our project in a way that was approachable and engaging, while also inspiring interest and support from a wider audience.

We co-created a single Instagram video where Marco introduced our newly formed iGEM Bologna team and explained the broader context of the iGEM competition. The video served as both an introduction to our project and a call to action for people to follow our journey. Through Marco’s communication style, the video translated technical concepts into a compelling narrative that resonated with his community.
